Improvisation Masterclass by Jeffrey Brillhart

Participants of all levels are encouraged to play! Jeff firmly believes improvisation is for everyone. He can give you good skills to use whether you’re an improvisation wizard or total novice. Mr. Brillhart is on the organ faculty of Yale University as instructor of improvisation; Director of Music and Fine Art at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian; Artistic Director of Philadelphia’s Singing City Choir; first prize winner of the American Guild of Organists’ National Competition in Organ Improvisation; and has performed extensively throughout the United States and abroad. He has also studied improvisation with Olivier Latry and Philippe Lefebvre. His improvisation textbook, Breaking Free: Finding a Personal Voice for Improvisation through 20th Century French Improvisation Techniques, is in use in organ departments throughout the country and available through Wayne Leupold Editions.

Clara Gerdes in recital

2017 Mid-Atlantic Regional Competition for Young Organists Winner


Clara Gerdes, from Davidson, North Carolina, is a third-year student at the Curtis Institute where she studies organ with Alan Morrison  and harpsichord with Leon Schelhase. She was the winner of the 2014 Albert Schweitzer and UNCSA School of the Arts organ competitions and the recipient of the first Pogorzelski-Yankee scholarship sponsored by the American Guild of Organists. Her performances have been broadcast on WDAV 89.9,  NPR’s “From the Top” and have been featured on the “Curtis Performs” livestream. She is a frequent assistant organist on the Wanamaker Organ, has performed around the East Coast venues including Princeton University and the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City, and serves as Organ Scholar at Saint Mark's Church, Locust Street. She is also a frequent collaborator and chamber musician, working with Choral Arts Philadelphia, Opera Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania Composers' Guild in addition to numerous Curtis student ensembles the previous two seasons, and assisting the Charlotte, Houston and King's College (Wilkes-Barre, PA) Royal School of Church Music in America summer training courses as organ scholar.

We will feature Clara in a rising star recital underwritten by the Clapper—Frysinger Fund.

Peter Richard Conte and Andrew Ennis in Recital

Wanamaker Grand Court Organist, Principal Organist at Longwood Gardens, and Choirmaster and Organist of Saint Clement’s Church, Peter Richard Conte is an internationally respected artist, praised by critics and audiences alike for his stunning technical facility matched with breathtaking musicianship, made known both through live performances as well as his many recordings. He will be joined by flugelhornist and organist Andrew Ennis for an exciting and engaging program, featuring such interesting transcriptions as Respighi’s Pines of Rome and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherezade, among others. This recital is a co-presentation of the Harrisburg Chapter AGO and Music at Pine Street (MAPS).
