Clara Gerdes in recital

2017 Mid-Atlantic Regional Competition for Young Organists Winner

Clara Gerdes, from Davidson, North Carolina, is a third-year student at the Curtis Institute where she studies organ with Alan Morrison  and harpsichord with Leon Schelhase. She was the winner of the 2014 Albert Schweitzer and UNCSA School of the Arts organ competitions and the recipient of the first Pogorzelski-Yankee scholarship sponsored by the American Guild of Organists. Her performances have been broadcast on WDAV 89.9,  NPR’s “From the Top” and have been featured on the “Curtis Performs” livestream. She is a frequent assistant organist on the Wanamaker Organ, has performed around the East Coast venues including Princeton University and the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City, and serves as Organ Scholar at Saint Mark's Church, Locust Street. She is also a frequent collaborator and chamber musician, working with Choral Arts Philadelphia, Opera Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania Composers' Guild in addition to numerous Curtis student ensembles the previous two seasons, and assisting the Charlotte, Houston and King's College (Wilkes-Barre, PA) Royal School of Church Music in America summer training courses as organ scholar. We will feature Clara in a rising star recital underwritten by the Clapper—Frysinger Fund.
